If you’re feeling sad, chocolate really can work! Chocolate causes the release of serotonin into the brain which is an instant happiness boost. Reach for dark chocolate, and don’t overdo it. Just a couple of squares should put a smile on your face.

2. Omega-3s

If you feel a bit depressed, Omega-3s can be the answer. Omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in fish, ease the symptoms of depression. A meal of salmon is perfect for the blues. And if you can’t stand fish, take a daily fish oil pill to keep your mood on an even keel.

Healthy fruits and vegetables can also get you out of a funk. A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry reported that those who ate a diet rich in whole foods were less likely to feel depressed compared to those who ate sugary foods, fried foods and processed foods. More than likely it’s due to the antioxidants and vitamins found in these foods. While they get a bad rap, Carbs actually can boost your mood. Studies show that just a small serving of carbs (low-fat dairy, fruit, beans) will actually perk you up. It’s because these carbs also help produce serotonin.

4. Saffron

Women suffering from symptoms of PMS can reach for a bit of saffron (or a saffron capsule) to help reduce irritability. Studies show saffron not only helps with symptoms of PMS, it also acts a bit like an antidepressant. Researchers think the spice helps make serotonin more available to the brain.

5. Coconut

Coconut has become quite the superfood lately. You can sip on coconut water and add coconut oil to nearly anything you back, sauté or fry (or you can slather it on your skin). The scent of coconut actually calms us and can lower the blood pressure. So grab some coconut water or just add rub a bit of coconut-scented lotion on your body the next time you feel a little stressed.

The next time you feel stressed or out of sorts, take a bite of a healthy vegetable, cook up some salmon or snack on a bite of dark chocolate. It could do wonders for your mood!
