The college football season is here, and if you have never seen a game in person before, now is a good time to start. Will the defending champions, the Crimson Tide of Alabama, be able to repeat, or will there be a new face at the top of the college football landscape? Here are 3 places you should visit at least once this season to experience one of the greatest Saturday traditions in America.
1. Bryant Denny Stadium– Tuscaloosa, AL
Tuscaloosa is currently home to the best team in college football, and is also home to one of the best game day experiences. The stadium holds over 100,000 people, with another 250,000 visiting the town. There are great places to tailgate along the University’s “quad” and a bunch of great bars to visit along “The Strip”. The atmosphere is always lively, with fans screaming “Roll Tide” to everyone that comes to visit.
2. Ohio Stadium– Columbus, OH
Also known as “The Horseshoe”, this stadium currently sits 104,000 + people on a gameday. The Ohio State University, with head coach Urban Meyer, has once again become a national powerhouse, and game days in this usually sleepy college town can be electric. Between the stadium and the basketball arena is where all the tailgating excitement take place. There are vendors of all kinds of food and its always possible to find a beer. Lane Avenue is another great party, where one of the biggest tailgate parties takes place (must be 21 or older to enter).
3. Memorial Stadium– Clemson, SC
Home of last year’s runner up, Clemson is a great place to catch a game if you want to bask in some of the best weather college football has to offer. Memorial Stadium holds about 81,000 people, and has some unique traditions, including the team riding the bus around the stadium and entering the field by running down “The Hill” while touching “Howard’s Rock”. Even if you don’t have tickets, there are plenty of places to experience the game. A lot of locals will tell you the best beer in town will be at the Tiger Town Tavern, just down the street from the campus. There will be tailgating all up and down the campus, including on College, Avenue.
Whether you cheer for one of the big schools or your local college, football season is one of the most wonderful times of the year.
